　　This Norwegian trio is based upon the uncommon line-up of Hammond B3 organ, piano and drums. The musicians were fascinated by the sound of these instruments together, and think it’s a shame that this line-up isn’t more common. But then, the rarity of this combination only makes for a more special experience for the audience. Capable of combining the groovy feel of the organ trio with the harmonic and melodic style of the piano trio, Excess Luggage might well be the perfect trio.

　　The music is based upon strong melodies played with an open mind, lots of energy and a well-developed interplay between three musicians who have known each other – and played together – for many years. The tunes are a mixture of original compositions developed specifically for this trio and new arrangements of well-known standards.

　　The Musicians:

　　Vigleik Storaas

　　One of the most important piano players in Norway, Storaas has received two Norwegian Grammys for his releases with his own trio. In addition to being a composer, he has performed on more than 20 jazz records for a range of artists including Karin Krog, NHØP, Terje Typdal, Warne Marsh and John Surman.

　　Steinar Nickelsen

　　Nickelsen was elected “Young Norwegian Jazz Musician of the Year” in 2002 with Solid!, a band that won the Getxo competition in Spain in 2003. Nickelsen has recorded with Pål Thowsen, Jon Eberson and Sidsel Endresen, and toured with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra and Pat Metheny, among others. After moving to Copenhagen, he played with a range of Danish musicians including Kresten Osgood, Jacob Fisher and Marc Bernstein. He currently lives in Shanghai.

　　Håkon Mjåset Johansen

　　Johansen was named Young Jazz Musician of the Year in 2000, the same year that his group Urban Connection won the Avignon Jazz Contest. Johansen also plays in a variety of acoustic jazz bands and big bands, including Motif, Come Shine, Haavard Wiik Trio, Mingus Ahh!Uhm!, Der Fuchs (with Per Zanussi) and the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra featuring Chick Corea. In 2001, he received the Norwegian Grammy for Urban Connections’ debut album. Amongst his collaborators are Jan Garbarek and Maria Kannegaard, to name a few.
